Optometry is among the most rapidly changing professions in the health care system. The explosion of knowledge about vision, combined with a major expansion of optometry's scope of practice, has made this profession especially exciting and demanding. The Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University is at the leading edge of vision care technology and patient care delivery. Among the smallest of the nation's optometry schools (only 36 students per class), Ferris offers virtually personalized instruction by one of the country's finest optometric faculties, as well as, the advantages of a large system of clinics throughout the United States and Canada that assures a thorough exposure to the widest possible range of patient-care experiences. Although the College is small, Ferris State University is large (over 11, 000 students) and, therefore, offers all the educational, cultural and social advantages of a major institution of higher learning.
The Michigan College of Optometry is a national leader in curricular innovation having just completed a full curricula review to ensure course content, course sequence and clinical relevance. We have developed basic health science courses that meet the unique needs of optometry and reinforce the clinical relevance of each subject area. We added new curriculum focus on geriatrics and rehabilitative care, added small group clinical problem solving at each level of the curriculum and continued to stress the importance of practice management business skills so our graduates can be successful in private practice as well as other modes of clinical practice. MCO is committed to producing graduates who have not only information resource skills, but also an affinity for lifelong learning and professional growth. By employing the latest instructional and clinical technologies, students learn to emphasize cognitive problem solving over repetitive technical manipulation. As befits health care practitioners, personal and professional ethics are also stressed as an integral component of the Ferris education.
The Michigan College of Optometry also provides post doctorate residency training in the areas of cornea and contact lens, ocular disease and primary care with on and off campus training facilities. The six different residency programs provide concentrated clinical experiences to the resident that result in advanced training in a specialized area of care.
Those admitted to the program find the MCO doctor of optometry degree program to be academically challenging, intellectually stimulating, and personally rewarding. Community outreach clinical programs that provide needed service to the underserved and underinsured help the students learn the value of giving back to their communities. Overseas clinical mission trips further instill a caring attitude as part of a service learning focus. Student leadership development opportunities are enhanced by the close relationships among our faculty and students. We pride ourselves on the quality of our teaching and innovation used to focus on student learning.
